WordCraft vs Microsoft Word: Free Open Source vs Microsoft 365

WordCraft is a free, open-source Word clone written in Rust; Microsoft Word comes with Microsoft 365 from $99.99 a year, or free in the browser with limits. WordCraft copies Word’s ribbon and saves real .docx files, but it is alpha software without cloud collaboration, printing or Copilot. Here is how they compare and who can switch.

Short version: WordCraft is a good fit for solo writing on your own computer (letters, essays, reports, CVs) when you want Word’s layout without a subscription. Stay with Word if you co-author in real time, depend on macros or Copilot, print a lot, or exchange long documents where page breaks must match exactly.

Price: Free vs $99.99 a Year

WordCraft is free forever under its open-source license. Microsoft Word comes with Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year (one person), or Microsoft 365 Family at $129.99 a year for up to six people. If you do not want a subscription, Office Home 2024 is a $179.99 one-time purchase for one PC or Mac.

There is also a free Word: Word for the web runs in the browser with a free Microsoft account and 5 GB of OneDrive storage, but files must be saved in OneDrive and the browser version has fewer features than the desktop app.

.docx Compatibility: Will Word Users Notice?

For ordinary documents, usually not: WordCraft reads and writes .docx natively, keeps styles, tables, comments and tracked changes, and its README targets parity with Word for Mac. Two things are still visible. Pagination does not match Word yet, so page numbers in a long report can shift, and real-world .docx testing is still in progress, so complex objects such as charts and SmartArt are the riskiest part of a round trip.

If you send a final version, export a PDF from WordCraft. If you need the other person to edit it, send the .docx and ask them to check the layout once.

Collaboration and AI: Word’s Biggest Lead

Word’s real advantage in 2026 is the cloud: several people editing one document at the same time, sharing links from OneDrive, version history, and Copilot drafting and summarizing inside the document. WordCraft is a local desktop app. You share a file by sending it, and there is no built-in AI assistant.

What WordCraft offers instead is automation: a command-line tool and an MCP server, so an agent such as Claude Code can create, edit and export .docx files for you. Useful for generating reports, not a replacement for Copilot inside the editor.

FAQ

Is WordCraft a good replacement for Microsoft Word?

For writing on your own computer and saving .docx or PDF, often yes. It is alpha software, though: page breaks can differ from Word, printing is not built in yet, and there is no co-authoring or Copilot.

Is there a free version of Microsoft Word?

Yes. Word for the web is free with a Microsoft account and 5 GB of OneDrive storage, with fewer features than the desktop app. WordCraft is a different, open-source program that runs offline.

How much does Microsoft Word cost in 2026?

In the US, Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, Family is $129.99 a year, and Office Home 2024 is a $179.99 one-time purchase. Prices from microsoft.com on October 13, 2026.

Will my .docx look the same in Word after editing it in WordCraft?

Simple documents usually do. Long documents may paginate differently, and charts or SmartArt are the riskiest elements. Export a PDF when the layout must be exact.

WordCraft or LibreOffice?

LibreOffice Writer is more mature and safer for complex documents today. WordCraft is newer, uses .docx as its native format and copies Word’s ribbon closely, so it feels more familiar to Word users.
