PhotoCraft vs Photoshop: Free Open Source vs $22.99 a Month

PhotoCraft is a free, open-source Photoshop clone written in Rust; Photoshop is Adobe’s industry standard at $22.99 a month. PhotoCraft already covers the core editing workflow and opens real PSD files, but it has no generative AI, no plug-in support and much less polish. Here is where each one wins and who can actually switch.

Short version: Pick PhotoCraft if you edit occasionally, need to open or fix PSD files you were sent, work on Linux, or want to stop paying for a subscription. Keep Photoshop if you rely on Generative Fill, plug-ins, advanced typography or a client pipeline where every PSD must come back exactly as it went out.

Price: $0 vs $276 a Year

PhotoCraft costs nothing, now or later; the license lets anyone use and redistribute it. Photoshop on its own is $22.99 a month with an annual commitment, or $263.88 a year paid up front. The Photography plan, $19.99 a month, adds Lightroom and 1 TB of storage and is the cheaper way to get Photoshop if you also edit photos. Creative Cloud Pro, with all Adobe apps, is $69.99 a month.

Over three years that is roughly $790 to $830 for Photoshop alone. If you open Photoshop a few times a month, that money is what PhotoCraft saves you.

US prices from Adobe’s plans page on October 13, 2026, before tax. Adobe often runs first-year discounts.

PSD Compatibility: Can You Swap Files with Photoshop Users?

Yes, for most everyday files. PhotoCraft opens PSD and PSB with layers, groups, masks, adjustment layers and smart objects intact, and saves back to PSD. The official page reports 134 of 135 real-world test files round-tripping exactly; the README is more careful and says re-saved files are not always byte-identical even when they render the same.

In practice: fine for retouching a client file, exporting assets from a designer’s PSD or making layout tweaks. Test before you trust it with a complex agency file full of effects, linked smart objects and fonts.

AI Features: Photoshop’s Biggest Lead

This is where Photoshop is far ahead. Generative Fill, Generative Expand and the other Firefly tools remove objects, extend backgrounds and create content from a text prompt. PhotoCraft has on-device subject and object selection, but nothing generative; maintainer estimates published in October put its AI area at about 10% ready.

PhotoCraft’s answer is the other direction: it exposes a command-line tool and an MCP server, so an AI agent like Claude Code can open files, apply edits and batch-export for you. That is useful for automation, but it is not the same as painting with a prompt.

FAQ

Is PhotoCraft as good as Photoshop?

Not yet. It covers the core workflow (layers, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, PSD files) but lacks generative AI, plug-in support and much of Photoshop’s depth. Its own README says it is not yet a replacement for daily professional work.

Is PhotoCraft a free version of Photoshop?

It is a free, independent reimplementation of Photoshop’s workflow, not a version of Photoshop. It is not made or endorsed by Adobe and contains no Adobe code.

Can I open my Photoshop files in PhotoCraft?

Yes. PhotoCraft reads and writes layered PSD and PSB files. Most files round-trip correctly, but test complex files before you rely on it.

How much does Photoshop cost in 2026?

In the US, $22.99 a month on an annual plan, $263.88 a year prepaid, or $19.99 a month in the Photography plan that includes Lightroom. Prices are from Adobe’s plans page on October 13, 2026.

Is PhotoCraft legal to use?

Yes. It is a clean-room implementation built from public specifications and released under the MIT and Apache-2.0 licenses. This is not legal advice, and independent reviews of its code provenance are still ongoing.
