Muse Code download: the official install, and the fakes to avoid
dev.meta.ai. Anything offering a "free Muse Code desktop client" is not from Meta.Official install commands
| System | Run this |
|---|---|
| macOS and Linux (Terminal) | curl -fsSL https://dev.meta.ai/install.sh | sh |
| Windows (PowerShell) | irm https://dev.meta.ai/install.ps1 | iex |
| Check it worked | muse --version |
The installer puts a native muse binary on your path. Then run muse in a project folder, trust the workspace and sign in. Our step-by-step guide covers the rest, and Windows users can read Muse Code on Windows.

What Meta does and doesn't ship
| Item | Official? |
|---|---|
| Muse Code CLI (macOS, Linux, Windows) | Yes, via the commands above |
TypeScript SDK (@muse-code/sdk) | Yes, source on GitHub (Node.js 20+) |
| Desktop app or GUI client | No |
| VS Code or JetBrains extension | Not in the official docs; use the CLI in the editor's terminal |
| .exe, .msi, .dmg or .7z installer files | No |
Fake "Muse Code" and "Muse Spark" downloads
Search results for muse code download already include GitHub repositories offering a "Muse Spark 1.3 free desktop client". They share the same pattern:
- They promise it is free, needs no API key and works offline. The real product needs a sign-in or an API key, and usage is billed.
- They offer .7z, .zip, .exe or .dmg files under Releases. Meta ships no such files.
- They are new, tiny accounts with a handful of commits and almost no stars.
- They treat Muse Spark as an app. It is the model behind Muse Code, not something you download.
Don't run files from these repositories. If you already did, disconnect the machine, run a malware scan, and change passwords and API keys used on it.
Community GUIs
A few unofficial projects put a desktop window or editor panel on top of Muse Code. Legitimate ones say they are unofficial and still ask you to install the official CLI and sign in; they don't replace it. We haven't reviewed any of them, so treat them like any third-party tool with access to your code.
Before you install
- Installing is free; usage is billed. See Muse Code pricing or estimate your bill with the cost calculator.
- Muse Code is not Meta Muse, the consumer assistant at muse.ai. They are separate products.
FAQ
Where can I download Muse Code?
Only from Meta's developer site. Muse Code is installed with a one-line command: curl -fsSL https://dev.meta.ai/install.sh | sh on macOS and Linux, or irm https://dev.meta.ai/install.ps1 | iex in Windows PowerShell. There is no separate installer file to download.
Is there a Muse Code desktop app?
No. Meta ships Muse Code as a command-line tool. Its docs describe no desktop app, GUI client or official IDE extension.
Is Muse Code free to download?
Installing is free. Using it is billed, either through a monthly plan or per token, and needs a sign-in or an API key.
Is "Muse Spark 1.3 free desktop client" real?
No. Muse Spark is the model behind Muse Code, not a downloadable app. Repositories promising a free, offline, no-API-key Muse Spark client are not from Meta. Do not run their files.
Is there an official Muse Code SDK?
Yes. Meta's docs point to a TypeScript SDK that drives Muse Code sessions over its session protocol: npm install @muse-code/sdk. It needs Node.js 20 or newer.
Are there unofficial GUIs for Muse Code?
Some community projects wrap the official CLI in a desktop window or editor panel. They are not from Meta, they still need the official CLI and a sign-in, and we have not reviewed them.
