Gemini Code in 2026: what still works and what it costs

"Gemini Code" usually means one of two Google products: Gemini Code Assist, the VS Code and JetBrains extension, or Gemini CLI, the open-source terminal agent. Both changed a lot this year.

Short answer Since June 18, 2026, Gemini CLI and the Code Assist IDE extensions no longer serve individuals: the free tier, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra. Google moved those users to Antigravity CLI. Only company licences (Code Assist Standard at $22.80 and Enterprise at $54 per user per month) and paid API access still run them.

The codeassist.google home page still advertises a free edition for individual developers. Google's own release notes say it stopped serving requests on June 18, 2026, so do not count on it.
