How to avoid a Claude account ban, and what to do if you get one

Claude bans can feel random, and Anthropic does not publish how it detects violations. What it does publish is the list of reasons, the rules behind them and the appeal process. This guide sticks to those official sources, so you know what actually puts an account at risk.

Short version: use Claude from a supported country, keep the account to yourself, pay with your own card, stay inside the Usage Policy, and never open a new account to get around a ban. If you are banned anyway, appeal at claude.ai/restricted while you can still log in.

The three official ban reasons

Anthropic's support article on warnings and appeals names three reasons an account gets banned:

  1. Repeated violations of the Usage Policy.
  2. Account creation from an unsupported location.
  3. Violations of the Terms of Service.

The Consumer Terms also say Anthropic "may suspend or terminate your access to the Services (including any Subscriptions) at any time without notice" if it believes you broke the terms. So a ban can come without a warning first.

8 habits that keep a normal account safe

Each of these maps to a rule in Anthropic's terms or Usage Policy.

  1. Sign up and use Claude from a supported country. Claude.ai and the API are only offered in the countries on Anthropic's Supported Regions list. Mainland China, Hong Kong, Russia and Iran are not on it. If you live somewhere that is not listed, the honest answer is that a consumer Claude account is not offered to you yet; changing how your location looks does not change that.
  2. One person, one account. The terms say you "may not share your Account login information, Anthropic API key, or Account credentials with anyone else" and "may not make your Account available to anyone else". Shared "carpool" plans, rented accounts and bought accounts all break this rule.
  3. Pay for your own plan with your own payment method. You agree to give "correct, current, and complete Account information". A plan paid through a top-up or resale service usually means the account or payment details are not really yours, and the terms forbid reselling the Services.
  4. Only automate through an API key. Outside an API key or another method Anthropic explicitly allows, the terms forbid accessing Claude "through automated or non-human means, whether through a bot, script, or otherwise". Do not script the claude.ai website.
  5. Do not log third-party tools in with your Pro or Max plan. Anthropic's Claude Code docs say subscription sign-in (OAuth) is meant for Claude Code and Anthropic's own apps. Tools built by other developers should use an API key, and Anthropic says it may enforce this without notice. Claude Code itself, signed in with your own plan, is fine.
  6. Treat plan limits as limits for one person. The same docs say Pro and Max usage limits "assume ordinary, individual usage of Claude Code and the Agent SDK". Running one subscription as a shared server for a team is not ordinary individual use; Team and Enterprise plans exist for that.
  7. Stay inside the Usage Policy, and skip "jailbreak" prompts. The policy bans bypassing the model's guardrails, "e.g., jailbreaking or prompt injection". Copying jailbreak prompts from forums is the quickest way to rack up the repeated violations that lead to a ban. The policy has 14 areas in total, from weapons and malware to fraud, so read it once if you work near any of them.
  8. Keep your login secure. Claude has no password; you sign in with Google or a one-time email link. Protect that Google or email account with two-factor authentication, and never forward a login link or code to someone else.

"Tips" that get accounts banned

Plenty of "anti-ban tricks" circulate on social media. The ones below either break a written rule or do nothing about the real ban reasons.

Switching the interface to French (or faking timezone and location)

Interface language is not one of the listed ban reasons. Location is. Pretending to be somewhere else does not make an unsupported location supported, and it is not something we recommend.

Opening a new account after a ban

The Usage Policy explicitly forbids it: you may not "circumvent a ban through the use of a different account, such as the creation of a new account". It also forbids using automation to create accounts. Appeal instead.

Running many accounts at once

The policy forbids coordinating activity "across multiple accounts to avoid detection or circumvent product guardrails".

Gaming the safety features

Some posts suggest pretending to be in a crisis so the model behaves differently. That misuses a feature built for people who are genuinely in danger, and it counts as intentionally bypassing guardrails.

"They are not allowed to ban you under US law"

Bans are based on the Terms of Service you accepted, and those terms let Anthropic suspend or terminate access without notice. If you are banned for a violation, the terms say you are not entitled to a refund.

If you get a warning

A warning means Claude flagged prompts as violating the Usage Policy. If you think it is a mistake, Anthropic asks you to email [email protected] with the details and your account information. Either way, change how you phrase the requests that triggered it, because repeated violations are reason number one.

If your account is banned: the appeal steps

  1. Log in to claude.ai. Free, Pro and Max users can still log in after a ban.
  2. Export your data first if you need it. The support article warns that what you can export "may be restricted depending upon the Usage Policy violation".
  3. Open https://claude.ai/restricted and fill in the appeal form. The Safeguards team then looks into why the account was disabled.
  4. Wait for the reply. Anthropic gives no fixed timeline and says response times are currently longer than normal.
  5. Do not open a new account while you wait. That is a separate violation and can sink the appeal.

For teams and businesses: the official channels

If several people need Claude, or you build a product on it, use a channel made for that instead of stretching one personal plan. Each has its own terms, billing and region rules; none of them is a way around the Supported Regions Policy.

Claude Code can run on all three; see Anthropic's Claude Code legal and compliance page.

FAQ

Why was my Claude account banned without warning?

Anthropic's terms allow it to suspend or terminate access "at any time without notice" if it believes the terms were broken. The three reasons it lists are repeated Usage Policy violations, account creation from an unsupported location and Terms of Service violations.

How do I appeal a Claude ban?

Log in to claude.ai and fill in the form at https://claude.ai/restricted. For a warning rather than a ban, email [email protected].

Can I just make a new Claude account after a ban?

No. The Usage Policy forbids circumventing a ban with a different account, including creating a new one.

Does using Claude in French or another language prevent bans?

No. Interface language is not a ban reason in Anthropic's documents. Location, policy violations and terms violations are.

Can I share one Claude Pro or Max plan with friends?

No. The Consumer Terms forbid sharing your login or making your account available to anyone else. Teams should use a Team plan or the API.

Do I get a refund if my account is banned?

If Anthropic terminates access because of a terms violation, the Consumer Terms say you are not entitled to a refund.

Is Claude available in China or Hong Kong?

Neither is on Anthropic's list of supported countries and regions, which applies to both Claude.ai and the API.
